Four is honestly one of the best ages to buy for. Their imagination has properly kicked in, they can follow simple rules, and they’ll happily disappear into a game of shops or doctors for ages. The catch? Their attention span is still short, so the best gifts for 4 year olds are the ones they can play with in lots of different ways, not toys that do one trick and get forgotten.

This list is sorted by type and budget, with the gifts that actually get used after Christmas Day. Buying for a younger sibling too? See my best gifts for 3 year olds and best gifts for 2 year olds.

Only buying one big thing? A first pedal bike or a dolls house will get played with for years. Prices move a lot before Christmas, so check the current one before you buy.

What’s Actually Trending This Christmas

Argos released its Top Toys for Christmas 2026 list in September, and there’s a lot on it for this age: a wooden play kitchen, a wooden train set, a four-storey wooden dolls house, the new Tonies Lite audio player, a Paw Patrol dino vehicle and a giant Bullseye plush from Toy Story 5. Bluey is still everywhere too.

Trending lists are useful for spotting what your little one’s friends will be talking about, but I wouldn’t buy anything just because it’s on one. The toys below made the cut because they get played with, not because they’re having a moment.

Pretend Play and Imagination

At 4, pretend play gets a lot more detailed. There are storylines, characters and very strict rules about who’s allowed to be the baby. Anything that gives them a world to play in is a winner.

Wooden Dolls House

A dolls house is one of those presents that grows with them. At 4 it’s moving the family from room to room and acting out bedtime. A couple of years later it’s elaborate stories with every toy in the house invited. Wooden ones last far longer than plastic and can be handed down.

  • Played with for years, not weeks
  • Easy for family to add to with furniture and figures
  • Good to know: most need assembly, so build it before Christmas Eve

Best for: The main “big” present.

Dressing Up Set

Firefighter, vet, astronaut, pirate, princess: whatever they’re into this week. A dressing up box is cheap, gets used constantly and doubles up for World Book Day and parties. Sets with three or four outfits are better value than a single costume.

Best for: A budget gift that gets used all year.

Bluey Playsets

If they’re Bluey obsessed (and most 4 year olds are), a playset with the house and figures means they can act out their favourite episodes. It’s one of the few character toys that actually encourages proper pretend play rather than just sitting on a shelf.

Best for: Bluey fans who love small-world play.

Active and Outdoor

14 Inch First Pedal Bike

Four is the classic age to move up from a balance bike or trike. A 14 inch bike usually fits most 4 year olds, but go by their inside leg rather than their age. If they’ve been on a balance bike, there’s a good chance they’ll skip stabilisers altogether.

  • Look for a light frame they can pick up themselves
  • Hand brakes sized for small hands make a big difference
  • Good to know: budget a helmet on top

Best for: The big “wow” present on Christmas morning.

Mini Micro Deluxe Scooter

If they don’t already have one, the three-wheeled Mini Micro still fits most 4 year olds and is brilliant for the school run once reception starts. It’s sturdy enough to hand down too.

Best for: Nursery and school runs.

Kids’ Walkie Talkies

A slightly unexpected one, but walkie talkies are a massive hit at this age. Spy missions in the garden, “over and out” from the bedroom, chats with a sibling across the park. Pair them with a cheap explorer kit with binoculars and you’ve got a whole afternoon sorted.

Best for: Getting them outside in winter.

Building, STEM and Puzzles

LEGO 4+ Sets

The 4+ range is designed as the bridge between Duplo and normal LEGO, with bigger starter pieces and simpler instructions. It’s a lovely “you’re a big kid now” present, and it all works with the regular LEGO they’ll get later. For bigger sets, my Black Friday LEGO deals post covers which ones are worth waiting for.

  • Builds confidence with following instructions
  • Works with any LEGO they get later
  • Good to know: small pieces, so keep them well away from babies and toddlers

Best for: Moving on from Duplo.

Marble Run

Marble runs are building, problem solving and a bit of physics all in one, and 4 year olds love watching what happens when they change the route. Look for one with big chunky pieces and larger marbles, and check the age on the box.

Best for: Curious kids who like to tinker.

Magnetic Tiles

Still one of the best toys you can buy at this age. At 4 they’re building proper houses, garages and rocket ships, and the tiles will keep going for years. If they already have a set, an add-on pack makes a great smaller gift.

Best for: Long-term value.

Quick tip

The gifts that get played with longest at 4

  1. Open-ended: dolls houses, magnetic tiles, LEGO
  2. Games with simple rules they can play with you
  3. Get-them-moving: a first bike or scooter
  4. Easy to add to, so grandparents can buy extras

Board Games and Early Learning

This is the age where family board games finally become possible (mostly without tears). Short games with simple rules are the sweet spot.

Orchard Toys Pop to the Shops

Kids go round the high street buying things with pretend coins, so it sneaks in counting and money without feeling like learning. A nice step up from the Shopping List game if they had that at 3.

Best for: A first “proper” board game.

Hoot Owl Hoot

A cooperative game where everyone works together to get the owls home before the sun comes up. Nobody loses to anyone else, which is a relief if you’ve got a 4 year old who takes losing very personally.

Best for: Kids who struggle with losing.

Giant Floor Puzzle

A big floor puzzle with around 24 to 48 pieces is perfect for a rainy afternoon. Dinosaurs, maps and space themes go down well, and finishing one on their own is a real confidence boost.

Best for: Quiet time and rainy days.

Screen-Free Entertainment

Yoto Player

Kids pop a card in to play stories, music and podcasts with no screen, camera or ads. At 4 they can work it completely on their own, and it’s brilliant for quiet time, bedtime and long car journeys. I talk more about how we use audio in my screen time post.

  • Easy for a 4 year old to use alone
  • Night light and clock built in
  • Good to know: cards cost extra, so they’re a perfect gift idea for relatives

Best for: Screen-free downtime.

Toniebox

The Yoto alternative, where kids pop a character figure on top to start their story. Tonies are on Argos’s top toys list this year with the new Tonies Lite, so expect them to be popular. Great if they love collecting characters.

Best for: Kids who love collecting.

Gifts by Budget

  • Under £15: Orchard Toys Pop to the Shops, dressing up set, floor puzzle, explorer kit
  • £15 to £30: LEGO 4+ set, marble run, walkie talkies, Hoot Owl Hoot, magnetic tiles starter set
  • £30 and up: Yoto Player, Toniebox, Mini Micro scooter, first pedal bike, wooden dolls house, Bluey playset

Prices move a lot before Christmas, so it’s worth comparing. The Entertainer often has good offers on LEGO, Orchard Toys and character toys. If you can wait, my Black Friday toys guide covers what’s worth holding off for (Black Friday is 27 November).

What to Avoid at This Age

  • Tiny beads and loose pieces if there’s a baby or toddler in the house too. Always check the age label
  • Slime and craft kits aimed at older kids. They’re popular, but many are labelled for older children and they end up being an adult job (and an adult clean-up)
  • Toys that do one thing and leave nothing to the imagination. Fun for a day, then forgotten
  • Anything with button batteries that aren’t secured behind a screw-fastened cover

Gifts for 4 Year Olds FAQs

What do most 4 year olds actually want for Christmas?

Usually whatever their favourite character is (Bluey and Paw Patrol are still huge), plus something they can ride. If you’re stuck, ask them to “write” a letter to Father Christmas. You’ll get a very honest list.

How much should I spend on a 4 year old’s present?

There’s no right amount. A £10 game can get more play than a £100 toy. If you’re a relative, £15 to £30 gets you something great, like a LEGO set, marble run or walkie talkies.

Is 4 too young for a pedal bike?

No, 4 is a really common age to start. Kids who’ve used a balance bike often pick it up quickly. Choose by their inside leg measurement rather than age, and always add a helmet.

What are good educational gifts for a 4 year old?

Board games like Pop to the Shops (counting and money), marble runs (problem solving), LEGO (following instructions) and audio players full of stories. The best ones don’t feel like learning at all.
