Three is a funny age to buy for. They’re too old for baby toys, too young for “big kid” stuff, and they’ve suddenly got very strong opinions. The good news is that 3 year olds play properly now: they pretend, they build, they race about and they’ll sit and listen to a story for ages. The best gifts lean into that. This list is sorted by type and budget, with the ones that get played with long after Christmas Day.

Not sure where to start? If you’re only buying one big thing, a wooden play kitchen or magnetic tiles will get played with for years. Prices change a lot before Christmas, so check the current one before you buy.

Imaginative and Pretend Play

This is the big one at 3. Role play is how they make sense of the world, so anything that lets them copy what grown-ups do tends to be a hit.

Wooden Play Kitchen

A play kitchen is one of those toys that lasts for years. At 3 it’s all cooking “dinner” and serving cups of tea, and older siblings get pulled in too. Wooden ones last far longer than plastic and look nicer in the living room.

  • Played with for years, not weeks
  • Great for siblings to share
  • Good to know: check the footprint and whether assembly is needed (it usually is, so not one for 11pm on Christmas Eve)

Best for: A main “big” present, or a joint gift from family.

Melissa & Doug Wooden Cutting Food

The pieces stick together with Velcro and come apart with a wooden “knife”, which 3 year olds find endlessly satisfying. A perfect add-on to a play kitchen or a great small gift on its own.

Best for: A smaller gift, or adding to a kitchen.

Doctor’s Kit

Every teddy in the house will get a check-up. A doctor’s kit is cheap, sparks loads of play and can even help with nerves about real doctor and dentist visits.

Best for: Kids who love caring for their toys.

Active and Outdoor

Mini Micro Deluxe Scooter

The three-wheeled Mini Micro is the scooter you see on every nursery run, and for good reason. It steers by leaning, which little ones pick up quickly, and it’s sturdy enough to hand down. It’s one of the pricier picks here, but it lasts.

  • Lean-to-steer is easy for 3 year olds to learn
  • Built to last through siblings
  • Good to know: budget a helmet on top

Best for: Speedy walks to nursery and the park.

Balance Bike

Three is a great age for a balance bike. Learning to balance first means many kids skip stabilisers altogether when they move to a pedal bike. Look for one that’s light enough for them to pick up themselves, with an adjustable seat.

Best for: Getting ready for a proper bike later on.

Creative and Messy Play

Play-Doh Set

A classic for a reason. A set with a few tools and cutters gives them something new to do with it, and it’s a brilliant rainy-afternoon saviour. Put a wipe-clean mat underneath and you’ll thank yourself later.

Best for: A cheap gift that gets used again and again.

Magnetic Drawing Board

All the drawing, none of the felt tip on the sofa. These are perfect for car journeys, restaurants and travel too. For more creative ideas, see my toddler art supplies guide.

Best for: Mess-free creativity on the go.

Puzzles, Games and Early Learning

Magnetic Tiles

If there’s one toy that grows with them, it’s magnetic tiles. At 3 they’ll build towers and houses, and by 5 or 6 they’re making marble runs and castles. The magnets mean fewer tears than wobbly blocks.

  • Grows with them for years
  • Easy to add to with extra sets later
  • Good to know: stick to reputable brands with the magnets sealed inside the tiles

Best for: Little builders and long-term value.

Orchard Toys Shopping List Game

A lovely first board game. Each player fills their trolley from their shopping list, so it’s matching and memory without anyone needing to read. Short enough that a 3 year old will actually finish a game.

Best for: A first family board game.

LEGO Duplo

Duplo hits the sweet spot at 3: big enough to be safe and easy to click together, with sets based on trains, farms, fire stations and favourite characters. It all works with whatever Duplo you already have.

Best for: Building and small-world play.

Quick tip

The toys that get played with longest at 3

  1. Open-ended: kitchens, magnetic tiles, Duplo
  2. Copy-the-grown-ups: doctor’s kits, play food
  3. Get-them-moving: scooters and balance bikes
  4. Easy to add to later, so family can buy extras

Screen-Free Entertainment

Yoto Mini

An audio player that kids control themselves by popping cards in for stories, music and podcasts. No screen, no camera and no ads. It’s brilliant for quiet time, bedtime and car journeys, and you can make your own cards with family recordings. I talk more about how we use audio in my screen time post.

  • Simple enough for a 3 year old to use alone
  • Portable, so it works in the car and on holiday
  • Good to know: cards cost extra, so they make great gifts for relatives to add

Best for: Screen-free downtime and bedtime wind-down.

Gifts by Budget

  • Under £15: Orchard Toys Shopping List, Play-Doh set, magnetic drawing board, wooden cutting food
  • £15 to £30: doctor’s kit, a small Duplo set, a starter set of magnetic tiles
  • £30 and up: Yoto Mini, Mini Micro scooter, balance bike, wooden play kitchen

Prices move around a lot before Christmas, so it’s worth comparing. The Entertainer often has good offers on toy brands like LEGO, Play-Doh and Orchard Toys. If you’re happy to wait, my Black Friday toys guide covers what’s worth holding off for (Black Friday is 27 November).

What to Avoid at This Age

  • Tiny loose pieces, especially if there’s a baby or toddler in the house too. Always check the age label
  • Toys that need an adult constantly, like complicated craft kits. They end up frustrating everyone
  • Do-one-thing toys that flash and sing but leave nothing to the imagination. They’re fun for a day
  • Anything with button batteries that aren’t secured behind a screw-fastened cover

Gifts for 3 Year Olds FAQs

How many presents should a 3 year old get for Christmas?

There’s no right number, and at 3 they honestly won’t count. Lots of families use the “want, need, wear, read” rule to keep things manageable. Too many gifts at once can be overwhelming, so you could save a few to bring out in January.

What do 3 year olds like to play with most?

Pretend play, building and anything active. Toys that can be used in lots of different ways (kitchens, tiles, Duplo) tend to get the most play.

What if relatives buy the same thing?

Share a short wish list with family early, or suggest add-ons to one big gift (extra Yoto cards, play food for the kitchen, a helmet for the scooter). It avoids doubles and makes the main present even better.

Is a 3 year old too young for a scooter?

No, three-wheeled scooters are designed for this age. Go for a three-wheeler rather than a two-wheeler, and always add a helmet.
