As a mum of two, choosing the right suncream for my children is something I take really seriously. Baby skin is incredibly delicate – much more sensitive to UV damage than adult skin – and I wanted something that would protect them without loading them up with chemical filters I couldn’t pronounce. After a lot of research and trial and error, I switched to mineral-only suncreams and haven’t looked back.
This guide focuses specifically on mineral and natural suncreams for babies and toddlers – the kind that use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients rather than chemical UV filters. They work by sitting on top of the skin and physically blocking UV rays, rather than being absorbed into the skin. For little ones with sensitive skin, eczema, or parents who prefer a cleaner ingredient list, they’re well worth the switch.

Mineral vs Chemical Suncream: What’s the Difference?
Before we dive into the reviews, it’s worth understanding the difference between mineral and chemical suncreams – especially when it comes to babies.
| Mineral Suncream | Chemical Suncream | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Sits on top of skin and reflects UV rays | Absorbs into skin and converts UV rays to heat |
| Active ingredients | Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide | Avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate etc |
| Suitable for sensitive skin | Yes – less likely to irritate | Can cause reactions in sensitive skin |
| When it works | Immediately on application | Needs 20-30 minutes to absorb |
| Texture | Can leave a white cast | Usually absorbs clear |
| Eco-friendly | Generally reef-safe | Some ingredients harmful to coral reefs |
For babies and toddlers, mineral suncreams are generally the preferred choice among paediatricians and dermatologists. Mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are preferable for little ones, and it’s important to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to ensure a good level of protection.
It’s also worth noting that babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight entirely – suncream is an added layer of protection, not a substitute for shade, hats, and protective clothing.

Buying Guide: What to Look For in a Baby Suncream
What SPF do I need for my baby?
Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays. SPF 50 offers marginally more protection and is worth choosing for fair-skinned babies or when spending extended time outdoors. Also look for a 5-star UVA rating alongside the SPF number – this confirms strong protection against the rays that cause deeper skin damage.
What age can I use suncream on my baby?
Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight entirely. For unavoidable sun exposure, keep them in the shade, use protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, and apply a small amount of gentle suncream to any exposed skin. From six months onwards, daily suncream use is recommended in the UK from March through to October.
How often should I reapply suncream?
Reapply every 2 hours as a minimum, and always immediately after swimming, towelling dry, or sweating. Most parents underestimate how much suncream to use – don’t be stingy! Apply generously and make sure you cover easy-to-miss areas like ears, the back of the neck, and the tops of feet.
Why does mineral suncream leave a white cast?
The white cast comes from the zinc oxide or titanium dioxide particles sitting on the surface of the skin. It’s a sign the suncream is working as intended! The cast is more noticeable on deeper skin tones. Rubbing it in thoroughly and warming it slightly in your hands before applying helps reduce the white cast significantly.
My top tips for applying suncream to wriggly toddlers
- Apply before getting dressed so you don’t miss any skin
- Make it part of the morning routine so it becomes a habit
- Warm the cream in your hands first – it rubs in much more easily
- Use a roll-on applicator for faces – so much easier with a wriggly toddler
- Apply 20-30 minutes before going outside so it has time to absorb
- Don’t forget ears, the back of the neck, and the tops of feet!
